Jubilation! Ambassadors on a Sacred Journey

In 1871, a group of African American singers from Fisk University embarked on a groundbreaking tour to keep their school afloat. Their journey northward—along routes once traveled by enslaved people seeking freedom—introduced audiences across the nation to African American spirituals for the first time. Despite facing both warm welcomes and harsh rejection, these Jubilee Singers persevered, sharing music rooted in African traditions and the experiences of enslaved people. Their performances touched hearts still grieving from the Civil War and transformed them into ambassadors for their school, their faith, and their heritage. This exhibition at the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage tells the story of those original Jubilee Singers while also bringing their legacy into the present day. The display honors the 150th anniversary celebrated by the modern Fisk Jubilation Singers and traces how their music and mission continue beyond the 1800s.
