Nature(+)6: Beginning Observational Drawing
Learn to sketch plants & landscapes at Bernheim Arboretum's nature drawing class.
This six-week course invites families to explore the art of drawing directly from nature. Students will work with botanical materials found at the garden, learning to observe carefully and capture what they see on paper. The focus is on mastering fundamental techniques—line, shape, value, and texture—using charcoal, pencil, pen, and ink. Beyond just creating realistic drawings, the practice becomes meditative and grounding, helping participants feel more present and connected to the natural world.
Classes meet both indoors and outdoors, led by Teresa Koester, an experienced art educator and the Arts Program Coordinator. All skill levels are welcome here; the teaching approach breaks down visual concepts into achievable steps so everyone can build confidence. You'll need to bring your own art supplies (a materials list is provided). Registration for all six sessions costs $160 for Bernheim members and $180 for non-members. Please register by 4 p.m. the day before the program starts, and note that pets aren't permitted. For questions or to sign up, call the venue or email the instructor directly.
