Outer Fossil bed Hike!

Outer Fossil bed Hike!

Hike the outer fossil beds to see rare Devonian fossils in their natural setting.

Explore one of the world's most remarkable locations for viewing Devonian fossils during this guided hike through the outer fossil beds at Falls of the Ohio State Park. This moderately challenging trek takes you across uneven limestone ledges where you'll encounter ancient rocks and geological formations in their natural setting. The experience includes some light wading—with the deepest water reaching about two feet—so be prepared for wet feet and a moderate current. Plan for about three hours total. This outing works well for kids ages 12 and up who are comfortable with uneven terrain and sun exposure. Bring plenty of water, wear a hat for protection, and use closed-toe shoes for safety on the rocky ground. Plan to arrive 15 minutes early to complete a waiver at the Observation Deck, where the hike begins. The activity is free to join, with a $2 parking fee. These hikes run only during late summer and fall, making this a seasonal adventure worth catching.
